“The Lighthouse Project” was brainchild of mine to do a daily blog of testimonies from the Christian walk to encourage others through life’s trials. Though the blog is not up, I thought it best to start with an awesome header graphic for the artistic direction on how the rest of the site should be designed. I wanted to go with an “urban” theme using a lot of vector and photo combinations like what a lot of the graphic artists are doing today. Tracey Jackson, Miami, Florida, USA.

“For this Design I wanted not just to create a banner that could be used in any kind of blog like music, personal thoughts, design, philosophy, science, history or any other, but also passing through a deep meaning. There are some questions about humanity that really intriguing me since my early days. Where do we come from? Where are we going? And what is our mission here.
The banner concept is not trying to give an answer for these questions, but is actually trying to reflect these questions on user’s subconscious. So I developed the evolution idea to reflect our mission as humans. From left to right I try to show some steps of evolution process, since prehistoric history until these days.

All big changes in human history were produced by revolutions. For that fact I Use [R] incorporated in the title. So users can read evolution and at the same time also read revolution. Evolution-Revolution. Revolution can also be noted in the design with the revolutionary Flag contradicting with the peace symbol within, French soldiers and the atomic bomb. All evolution process is being pushed by an elephant, which is a strong animal that exists from a long time ago. This idea is to create movement and consequently reflect the questions where do we come from? And where are we going? The elephant baby is also there to represent the different generations along the evolution path.
On the right side of the banner there’s a glimpse of what I believe will be the future. Human mind uses just 15% of his brain capacities, so when humans will use 100% I’m sure we can easily travelling around the universe 10 times or more the speed light, conquering new worlds… This fact is presented by the astronaut starting traveling to the universe (present) and the UFO on the top dropping small spaceships (future connections). For enhance mystery I used a blue light.
This banner is better viewed in a black background.” Designed by João Filipe Cunha, Portugal.

“I think about a header graphic as a start of a page, like to start a conversation – so the idea was born. We all start a (good) talk with an easy greeting – so why don’t use this for a website? after trying some stuff i decided to keep the design as simple as the idea – so I used lovely RNS Baruta Black. Simple and clean, but also interesting and playful.

I’ll be finishing The Sexiest Dirty Underground header theme on my blog to bring the total to 20 headers in the next two weeks. For Rich-Bitch-Fish, Co-op-Bone, and Woman-Confident I used the process of first sketching on paper, then working with illustrator, and finally finishing in Photoshop. Make a real planet

How to make a real and fantastic planet in Photoshop.

This tutorial should step you through making a simple, yet realistic-looking planet using Adobe Photoshop 7, and ONLY Adobe Photoshop 7. We’re working small here, so keep in mind that the larger you work, the harder the planet will be to create (just a bit more work as size increases).
To complete this tutorial and match what I’m showing you in the sample images, you’ll need this image for a texture, so save it in a safe spot, we’ll get to it in a moment.
A thank you to Kyle Nervik of Bougal.com, who helped me figure out how to best relate my methods to a general audience by being my development guinea pig (sitting on AIM for over an hour, listening to me argue with myself, and offering suggestions). Thanks, Kyle!

Start with a plain black image, 500×500 pixels. Make a new layer and, using the circle marquee select a circle about 2/3 the size of the root image.
Fill it black, and leave the marquee active (do not deselect).
Grab the Airbrush Soft Round 300 (we need a big, fuzzy brush).
Set the opacity of the brush to 30% and the mode to Linear Dodge.
We’re going to pretend our light source is coming from the upper left (this is arbitrary).
Start brushing color (we’ll use hexadecimal value 664029) from about 8 o’clock to 2 o’clock, working towards the upper left corner. You want the result to look like the image to the left of this text. Basically, we’ve just established the main “sphere” of our planet.

Alrighty, time to grab that planet texture I had you download. Open it up and go to Edit > Define Pattern. Name it whatever you want.
This done, grab your trusty brush tool again (same exact settings as before, and go up to the brushes tab at the top of your screen in Adobe PS. You need to set the texture of your brush to the planet texture for the next step. The window for the brush settings looks like so…
Select the pattern we just made from the menu of available patterns.

Repeat the brush motions that we used to define our basic sphere, only this time we’re adiding texture to the planet. Again, brush from 8 to 2 o’clock only, leave the dark area dark, as it’s the shadow on our planet. The result should look like so…
(we’ve still got our marquee selecting the circle of our planet… don’t deselect the planet quite yet).

Now we’re going to help our sphere a little via Photoshop’s sphereize filter.
Go to Filter > Distort > Sphereize, set it to 100%, and click OK. Just for good measure, repeat this action for an additional 50%.
Once that’s done, cut your planet from the layer it is wth the Edit > Cut command
(or ctrl – x if you’re shortcut savvy).
Paste it into a new transparent layer and delete the old layer. This gets rid of some annoying pixel-y artifacts around the rim of the planet, leaving you with a nice, smooth edge to work with (because real planets don’t have pixels!).
This is now our “planet” layer. It would be a good idea to rename it as such so you know what you’ve got.
Next we’ll add some atmosphere.
Duplicate your planet layer, and then go to
Layer > Layer Style > Blending Options
.
You can also get to the resulting window
via right-clicking on the layer in the layer palette
and selecting Blending Options.

Change the Blend Mode to Linear Dodge, and the Fill Opacity to 0% (as shown)
Add an outer glow as shown… for the purposes of this tutorial, we’ll use hexadecimal color value of 6283A7 for the glow color.

Add an inner glow as shown… again, we’ll use hexadecimal color value of 6283A7 for the glow color, because the two glows need to match, or they’ll look really silly where they meet at the planet outline.

Your planet should look something like this now. Not too shabby, but we’ve got way too much atmosphere on our planet.
Create a new layer on top of your second planet layer. Link this layer to the top planet layer (the one with all the effects), and then merge the two together. This will make your effects just a layer instead of actual effects… so you’ll now have a layer with just your blue ring of atmosphere in it. Youll need to set the layer mode of the atmosphere layer to Linear Dodge again to make it match the image once more. This is now our “atmosphere” layer. Again, it is a good idea to rename it as such so you know what you’ve got.

Next we’ll grab the eraser tool… Same brush size as the one we used to set our original sphere (Airbrush Soft Round 300 or sme equivalent big fuzzy brush).
Gently erase between 6 and 3 o’clock on your atmosphere layer. You should get a result like this… (the white circle is the brush erasing).
We’re looking pretty good right now, but we’re not done yet.

Let’s be nitpicky and add a tiny bit of embossing to the planet to really make it pop. Right now you should still have three layers total… atmosphere on top of planet on top of black background. Duplicate the planet layer.
Go to Filter > Stylize > Emboss and emboss the sucker at an Angle of about -33 degrees, Height of 1 and Amount of 500%.
This done, desaturate (ctrl – shift – u) the embossed layer and duplicate it again so you have two of the suckers.

We need to isolate the light and dark elements of the embossed layers, because we’ll play with both seperately (hence the two layers.)
Use levels on the topmost one to isolate the lights by increasing the darkness until the main part of the layer is black with just a few white squiggles. This is now our “highlights” layer. You might want to rename it as such.

Repeat this with the lower embossed layer, only this time pull the lightness up so you’ve got all white with black squiggles. This is now our “shadows” layer. Again, it might be a good idea to rename it as such.

Change the black embossed layer mode to Linear Dodge, and the white embossed layer mode to Multiply. You’ll notice a strong white outline in the shadow of our planet… use your big fuzzy eraser brush to erase it like you did the extra atmosphere we had earlier.
At this point, you’re just about done. Our embossing is a little blatant, however. Planetary details need to be subtle to work with the right sense of scale, so make our “highlights” layer about 50% opaque. The “shadows” layer should be good at about 70% opacity.
I personally like a good amount of contrast, so I toyed slightly with curves (ctrl – m) to make the planet a little more vibrant. This is optional… you’ve now got a finished planet!

Creative Adding Label to the Skin
Here is useful tutorial where I’m gonna show you how to add the label to the human skin in Photoshop. In this tutorial I will be using this stock photo of the man.

Firstly, you should find a nice stock photo to work with. As I mentioned above, I used a photo of the young man, if you want you can download it and get to work. Open up it and press Ctrl+J to duplicate layer. After that move to the lower layer and desaturate it with Image > Adjustments > Desaturate. Then go back to the copied layer and correct the color balance using Image > Adjustments > Levels. Set up following presets:
Creative Adding Label to the Skin 01
Creative Adding Label to the Skin 02
Creative Adding Label to the Skin 03
Then change layer opacity to 70%.
Creative Adding Label to the Skin 04
Now, duplicate this layer with previous and duplicate (Ctrl+J) new layer again. After that apply Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur with next presets:
Creative Adding Label to the Skin 05
Then mess with the layer mode & opacity/fill. I tried Overlay with opacity of 45%.
Creative Adding Label to the Skin 06
See the difference now? Ok, after that select the Sharpen Tool and increases the sharpness on man face.
Creative Adding Label to the Skin 07
I would like to add a contrast more. For this effect use the Burn Tool (Brush: 20 px, Range: Midtones, Exposure: 40%) and add dark spots on the face.
Creative Adding Label to the Skin 08
Move to the next step. Use the Polygonal Lasso Tool to create selection as on my picture below and fill it with black color.
Creative Adding Label to the Skin 09
Remove selection with Ctrl+D and apply Outer Glow layer style to this layer.
Creative Adding Label to the Skin 10
Your picture should look as mine:
Creative Adding Label to the Skin 11
Ok, create a new layer, after that select the Brush Tool and a hard round brush about 4 pixels and add a couple of more strokes with dark red (#47091a) color.
Creative Adding Label to the Skin 12
Then apply Filter > Blur > Radial Blur:
Creative Adding Label to the Skin 13
Ok, mess with the layer mode & opacity/fill one more time. I tried Overlay with opacity of 70%.
Creative Adding Label to the Skin 14
Time to add the label! Create a new layer use the Rectangular Marquee Tool to create selection as on the picture below and fill it with color of #c0b6ba.
Creative Adding Label to the Skin 15
Remove selection with Ctrl+D, then get out the Horizontal Type Tool to write out the text. Use the Arial font and chose font color as #221820 for text lines.
Creative Adding Label to the Skin 16
Merge text layers and label layer together and apply Filter > Noise > Add Noise to add a little bit noise to the label.
Creative Adding Label to the Skin 17
Hopefully your picture looks something like this:
Creative Adding Label to the Skin 18
Ok, after that apply Edit > Transform > Free Transform to rotate label and move it left as on my picture below.
Creative Adding Label to the Skin 19
Move to the next step. Select the Burn Tool (Brush: 20 px, Range: Highlights, Exposure: 20%) and add some dark lines to the label.
Creative Adding Label to the Skin 20
Looks better now, isn’t it? Time to bring the shadow under the label. Move to the layer under and create another one layer above. Use the Polygonal Lasso Tool to create selection and fill it with black to transparent gradient.
Creative Adding Label to the Skin 21
Remove selection with Ctrl+D and use the Blur Tool to add a little blur to the shadow.
Creative Adding Label to the Skin 22
And the last one thing that we need to do is to bring sutures to the picture. For this effect select the Brush Tool and a soft round brush about 1 pixel. Make a couple of sutures with black color on the new layer.
Creative Adding Label to the Skin 23
Looks not so realistic. But I know how to resolve this problem. Press Ctrl+T and reduce current layer halved.
Creative Adding Label to the Skin 24
Duplicate this layer with Ctrl+J and move it below like on my picture. Merge two of these layers in one and set up opacity to 75% for new layer.
Creative Adding Label to the Skin 25
Ok, that is it! Looks realistic and very creative as for me. Don’t be afraid to make your own experiments.
